Everybody Smiles in the Same Language
Comly Elementary School Mural
Autistic Support Class
2012

The Autistic Support Class at Comly Elementary had enjoyed my 10 week visits through the Philadelphia Arts in Education Partnership for several years prior to this project. We decided to make a mural installation for the 2nd floor hallway. The student population has a varied ethnic composition with many families speaking their native tongues at home. A smile is a universal expression understood in any language. The students began the project by researching with their families the word smile in different languages, then the class stamped these on border tiles along with smiley face tiles. Each student made a self portrait, and explored impressed texture with found objects, and finally applied color and glazed the pieces.
